This was actually my second visit, as I came before when Sally ( now at The Pem ) when I first moved back to London. Now with Jake as head chef I was excited to come and experience it and was delighted that is was just as amazing as before. This is the land of amazing game, and with The Ledbury being closed ( soon to open again soon however ) this is the only way you can get your Brett fix of game goodness. Starter of Grilled mackerel with beetroot, sour cream, and shiso was really good and deserves it’s own mention, as well as their pub treat of a Venison Scotch Egg- it’s delicious and I brought my family with me, my boys loved it. Going for the whole hog with roasts, it has to always be the Slow cooked roe deer shoulder, but instead of ordering Beef, they had two ducks in and offered that instead, and wow it was really delicious, and may be torn in the future between this and the beef that I had last time. It is a Sladesdown duck, which is quite possibly the best duck I have eaten before, and I’ve eaten tons of duck in France over the years. All the trimmings and delicious puddings too. It’s a joy to eat here. Rolled out happy. I must return for the plated dishes only at some point next year as I have done the Sunday Roast visits and very much want to come and experience the weekday cooking, especially after the mackerel being so good.
